It had a simple design, with a raw-edge wooden headboard attached to the wall. The headboard wasn’t attached to the bed frame so when the entire structure was pulled up to free up the floor space, this accessory remained on the wall, serving as a decoration. Adding a hanging bed with a pulley system to a cabin was a clever move and a practical decision taken by the designer. Given the limited floor space, this allows a single room to change function easily, transforming from a bedroom into a living space.
Our enthusiasm for DIY projects involving Ikea products led us to explore a bit more the versatility of the Ikea Lack Table. There’s actually a whole series entitled like that and it includes a TV unit, coffee table, side table and some wall shelves. Today we’ll only focus on the tables, trying to find ways to integrate them into ingenious projects. Let’s start with a simple transformation. For this project you can use either a Lack or a Hemnes table which are both Ikea coffee tables. Get some wooden boards and cut them to size so you can make a tabletop. Stain them and measure the center of the table so you know where to place the first board. Clamp each end down and then add the others the same way. Glue and screw all the boards, turn the table upside down and put something heavy on the middle. Let it sit overnight, add more screws in the center of each board but on the underside so you don’t see them.
While the perfect rattan chair might jump out at you, it might not. So don’t limit yourself! Rattan chairs aren’t the only pieces of rattan furniture. There are consoles, bar carts, ottomans and many other pieces. Just keep looking until you find one that will fit your living room perfectly. Are you loving the airy rattan style but not really the color? One word: paint. Just because it’s rattan doesn’t mean it’s untouchable. So grab a can of spray paint in that bright shade you’ve been eyeing and go to work. Frugal tip, this is also a great way to bring an old inherited piece of rattan furniture to life in a modern living room like yours.
